Created a material stronger than steel

A team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has created a new material that it claims is stronger than steel, yet as light as plastic.

The scientists even stated that the material could be easily mass-produced. They noted that the material has very unusual properties.

The researchers used special two-dimensional polymers that can form sheets. Most other polymers are only able to form one-dimensional chains, which then form into three-dimensional objects.

The result is an extremely strong and thin material, dubbed 2DPA-1. It is four to six times more resistant to deformation than bulletproof glass. The new material is also suitable for "protecting metal in automobiles and other vehicles or steel structures."
